Abdulsamad ‘will always have a special place in my heart,’ says Hannatu Musawa

Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has said she shares a lasting bond with her former husband, Abdul Samad Rabiu, describing the billionaire businessman as family and one of the most important people in her life.

Musawa made the remarks during an interview on Mic on Podcast on Saturday, where she reflected on her past marriage to the chairman of BUA Group and their relationship following their divorce.

The minister said she has no regrets about marrying Rabiu, noting that the experience remains a source of pride and personal fulfilment. According to her, the end of their marriage did not diminish the affection and respect they share.

“Abdul Samad is my family. His family and my family have become one,” Musawa said. “We have known each other for over 30-something years, and essentially, that is how we see ourselves — as family.”

She added that their relationship is rooted in deep familiarity and mutual care, describing Rabiu as a father figure, an older brother and a close friend. “He is my protector, and he is to many people. I am very happy to have a member of my family in Samad Rabiu,” she said.

Musawa explained that despite their divorce, both families remain closely connected, stressing that cultural values play a role in sustaining those ties. “He is my ex-husband, but we are still family. Once you are joined together, you continue to participate in each other’s lives,” she said.

Reflecting on how her life might have unfolded differently, the minister said she believes destiny shaped her current path. “Man proposes, God disposes. Perhaps had I remained married to Abdul Samad, I would not have been here seated and talking with you,” she noted.

Asked whether she still has feelings for the Kano-born entrepreneur, Musawa said her affection remains unwavering. “Samad will always have my heart. He is one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had, and I will always love him for the rest of my days,” she said.

Musawa currently serves in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, overseeing the arts, culture and creative economy portfolio.
