APC dismisses Shettima replacement rumours, says claims are baseless
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting a possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the claims as speculative and unfounded.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC said its attention had been drawn to what it described as a growing media frenzy over rumours of an imminent change in the vice-presidential slot.
Morka noted that while the reports initially appeared subtle, they had recently escalated with the circulation of names of individuals allegedly being considered as replacements for Shettima.
“The stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” the APC stated, stressing that there is no basis for the claims being circulated in the media.
The party cautioned media organisations against giving prominence to what it termed rumour-peddlers and “mischievous news sources” whose intention, it said, is to sow discord and confusion within the polity.
The APC further emphasised that political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are not yet permissible under existing laws and electoral regulations, noting that its current priority remains governance rather than electioneering.
According to the statement, the party is fully focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in the delivery of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including the implementation of reforms it said are gradually transforming the economy and improving the living standards of Nigerians.
The party also advised ministers, senior government officials and party leaders to refrain from actions or comments that could fuel unnecessary speculation, urging them instead to concentrate on their responsibilities and contribute to the success of the Tinubu administration.
The APC reaffirmed its commitment to unity within the party and pledged continued support for President Tinubu, whom it described as a visionary leader steering the country through bold reforms.
