Presidential aide unveils N20bn North-West climate fund

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), Abdullahi Yakasai, has unveiled a climate fund targeting N20bn over four years to tackle flooding, drought and other climate-related challenges in the region.

Yakasai announced the initiative on Tuesday at the North-West Climate Summit held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

The summit also featured the unveiling of a climate academy and a climate investment marketplace designed to attract funding for climate-related projects and equip young people with relevant skills.

Speaking with State House correspondents on the sidelines of the event, the presidential aide said the fund would mobilise resources to address flooding, drought, migration and the transition to renewable energy.

“We’re looking at the region of N20bn in the next four years. So all these are aimed at easing the problems of climate, because this is what is bedevilling the whole world,” he said.

He added that the initiative would explore opportunities in climate financing to help the region address environmental challenges.

“The whole world now is focused on climate change. Even climate financing came up after COVID-19, so the whole world realised the need for climate financing, and we’re working to see how we can tap into that and help the region to alleviate all the issues around climate change,” Yakasai said.

According to the summit brochure obtained by our correspondent, the fund will mobilise grants, impact capital and carbon finance to support climate resilience and women-led green enterprises.
