Oyo APC threatens post-tenure probe of Makinde over N100bn loan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has warned Governor Seyi Makinde and any officials found culpable of misappropriating public funds that they will be held accountable after his tenure expires in May 2027.

The opposition party issued the warning while criticising the state government over a N100 billion loan facility approved by the Oyo State House of Assembly, describing the borrowing as financially reckless and insensitive to residents’ plight.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, also urged Makinde to reconsider the proposed December 29, 2026, local government election. It alleged that more than N4.2 billion belonging to the state’s 33 local government councils could be wasted on the exercise.

The APC’s reaction followed the presentation of the governor’s loan request to the House of Assembly by its Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin. The party questioned the speed of the approval, noting that opposition parties had raised concerns about the borrowing plan.

Questioning the need for the loan, the APC said Makinde had acknowledged that the Federal Government was releasing billions of naira in monthly allocations to states and local government councils, including those in Oyo State. It argued that the increased revenue had not provided sufficient socio-economic relief for residents.

The party also faulted the government’s explanation that the loan would be used to refinance existing debts and fund ongoing infrastructure projects. It alleged contract cost inflation, frequent contract variations and disregard for due process, but did not provide specific evidence to support the claims in its statement.

Furthermore, the APC criticised the administration’s repeated requests for supplementary budget approvals and questioned the implementation of previously approved budgets. It also cited the resignation of the director-general of the Due Process Office and reported departures of other senior officials as grounds for concern over the management of public resources.

The party reiterated that Makinde and any officials found to have misappropriated public funds would be required to account for their actions after leaving office. It urged the governor to reconsider the loan and ensure the responsible management of public resources before the end of his administration.
