Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has cleared the 16-year-old backlog of N201 million sign-on fees owed to coaches and players of Kwara United Football Club.

The Governor made the announcement on Friday during a reception for athletes who represented the state at the 2024 National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

At the event, held at the state banquet hall in Ilorin, AbdulRazaq also rewarded the medal-winning athletes with cash gifts. Gold medalists received N1 million each, while silver and bronze medalists were given N500,000 and N300,000 respectively. Coaches also got cash rewards.

“For us, these athletes are our heroes and heroines. With six gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze medals, they have made Kwara proud,” he said. “This reception is to celebrate and appreciate their patriotism and contribution to the state.”

The Governor noted that the payment of the longstanding Kwara United debt reflects his administration’s commitment to sports development and the welfare of athletes and coaches.

He highlighted the government’s investments in upgrading sports infrastructure, including the construction of an indoor sports hall, Olympic-size swimming pool, eight-winged squash courts, and a dedicated table tennis area.

Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bola Magaji, commended the Governor’s unwavering support, stating that the achievements would not have been possible without his intervention.
