Abiodun, monarchs, diplomats honour Obasanjo’s enduring legacy

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as an enduring study in leadership, public service, and national responsibility as he marked his 89th birthday.

Abiodun made the remark at the 89th birthday lecture held in honour of the elder statesman at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on Thursday in Abeokuta. The lecture was themed “The Global Africa Enlightenment: From Chains to Renaissance.”

According to the governor, national development depends on strong institutions and leaders who think beyond immediate interests. He said the theme of the lecture reflects Africa’s journey from colonial domination to its ongoing pursuit of dignity, development, and progress.

Abiodun stressed that Africa’s future lies in strengthening institutions, investing in knowledge, and building societies founded on justice, innovation, and unity. He noted that the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy introduced under Obasanjo laid a foundation for economic restructuring and public sector reforms.

He further highlighted key reforms during Obasanjo’s presidency from 1999 to 2007, including the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, banking sector consolidation in 2003, and major reforms in the telecommunications industry.

The governor also praised Obasanjo’s influence beyond Nigeria, particularly in conflict resolution and diplomacy across Africa. He noted his roles as mediator in regional crises and his engagements through the African Union and the United Nations, urging young Africans to study his leadership principles.

Delivering the lecture, Haiti’s Ambassador to South Africa, Jean Robert Pillard, said history binds people together while culture affirms shared identity. He described the Global Africa Enlightenment as a reunion of peoples with common heritage and a call to action for the renewal of African civilisation.

Also speaking, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, described Obasanjo as a role model whose contributions to Nigeria and the African continent would continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
