Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, in a display of care and empathy, has funded the distribution of food packs to vulnerable members of his Senatorial district.

The lawmaker, who turned 60 on Monday, 25th March, made this known in a statement signed by his media aide, Enitan Olukotun.

Abiru, credited for his consistent support of the underprivileged through quarterly food distributions, announced the provision of an increased 10,000 food packs for vulnerable households across the 98 wards spanning the 16 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and Local Government Areas within his Senatorial district.

On his 60th birthday, Abiru conveyed his gratitude to the residents of Lagos East, expressing thanks to the Almighty for his blessings and appreciating his wife, Fesyisola, whom he described as his “rock of support”, as well as his children for their steadfast encouragement.

Acknowledging the pivotal role played by party leaders, notably President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in shaping his political journey, the celebrant further thanked constituents of the senatorial district for entrusting him with the opportunity to represent them.

He stated:” I am using the special ocassion of my 60th birthday to identify with you, my esteemed constituents in this current economic hardship largely due to wrong policy choices of past administrations, which the current government is trying to correct.

“It will be a smack of crass insensitivity for me to throw a social party, entertaining guests when most of our people are struggling to meet their basic needs, particularly food. Therefore, I shelved all social plans and decided to celebrate by providing Food Packs to over 10,000 households in Lagos East Senatorial District.

“Like I have been doing every quarter, the categories of vulnerable people are widows, people living with disability, unemployed youths, women and the aged. For more inclusiveness and wider reach, vulnerable persons who were shortlisted from online nominations will also benefit.”

Stating that the federal government was making steady progress in ensuring the restoration of food security and commodity prices stability, the lawmaker expressed optimism that the current economic hardship would end in a short while.

He further disclosed that the state’s Governor was working assiduously to implement various interventions which would ease the sufferings of the masses very soon.

“My commitment to deliver on my mandate remains unshaken, on the three pillars of : Legislative, Empowerment/ Facilitations and Endowment, which my interventions are anchored on, will be further deepened to ensure greater good to a larger number of our people”, he added.

Recall that the Lagos east senator had, in 2020, launched a programme to disburse more than N150 million Naira over a period of 24 months to over 2,500 vulnerable people under his COVID-19 Financial Relief Scheme.

Beneficiaries of his largesse had received direct credit of N5,000 each for the period the programme lasted.
