ADC blasts Okpebholo over threat to Peter Obi’s safety

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over a recent statement declaring former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, persona non grata in the state.

In a viral video, Governor Okpebholo warned that he could not guarantee Obi’s safety if he visited Edo, prompting swift backlash from political circles and civil society groups.

Reacting in a post on X, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the governor’s remarks as “disgraceful and undemocratic,” insisting that Obi, as a Nigerian citizen, does not need any state governor’s permission to travel within the country.

“Edo State is part of Nigeria, and Obi is a free citizen. He does not need any governor’s clearance to meet Nigerians in their own country,” Abdullahi wrote.

The ADC also criticised the governor’s reaction to Obi’s visit and donations, calling it a sign of insecurity and poor leadership.

“When a governor panics over courtesy visits and public goodwill, it shows something is fundamentally wrong,” Abdullahi added.

He noted that true leaders who have genuinely served their people would not be unsettled by others receiving public applause or support.

Abdullahi concluded by saying that the support Obi enjoys may simply reflect the leadership qualities Nigerians now desire and expect.
