ADC condemns alleged attack on Obi, warns against threats to democracy
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the reported attack on Peter Obi and several party leaders in Benin, Edo State, describing the development as a serious affront to Nigeria’s democratic values.
The incident was said to have occurred on Tuesday at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, a senior figure in the ADC, shortly after Obi and other political stakeholders returned from the party’s secretariat. They had earlier attended a reception formally welcoming Olumide Akpata, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, into the ADC.
Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, disclosed the alleged attack in a post on X, stating that Obi and other party chieftains were targeted shortly after their arrival at Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
In a separate reaction, Bolaji Abdullahi, interim national publicity secretary of the ADC, described the episode as disturbing and detrimental to democratic progress. He linked the development to an earlier warning reportedly issued in July 2025 by Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo State, cautioning Obi against visiting the state without prior notice.
“We didn’t know at the time that the governor’s threat would include an assassination plot,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesperson maintained that acts of violence and intimidation undermine the nation’s democratic foundations and called on Nigerians to reject such tendencies.
He affirmed that the party would remain resolute in its commitment to peaceful political engagement and the protection of opposition rights.
