ADC membership registration flooded with fake identities, says Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima says the online membership registration portal of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been inundated with fake names and fictitious identities.

The ADC had launched its nationwide online membership registration on March 1 as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections, in compliance with the amended Electoral Act.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interfaith Iftar hosted by President Bola Tinubu and attended by members of the Federal Executive Council, Shettima criticised the opposition party, describing it as inconsistent in its advocacy for electoral reforms.

According to the vice-president, the party that had strongly pushed for electronic transmission of election results was unable to manage the integrity of its own digital registration platform.

“The same Alliance for Democratic Confusion that was adamant that we must have electronic transmission of votes opened their portal for membership registration, and it was overwhelmed by an avalanche of fake names and fictitious identities,” he said.

Shettima also accused opposition groups of spreading misinformation to undermine the government.

Quoting former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, he said: “Truth is so precious that it must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies,” adding that falsehoods were being used as a political strategy by the opposition.

The vice-president urged political appointees and elected officials to actively promote and defend the achievements of the current administration as the political climate begins to heat up ahead of future elections.
