President Bola Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, describing the former Governor of Kwara State as a “true statesman” and a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the elder statesman’s death at the age of 84. He praised Adebayo’s unwavering dedication to public service, progressive politics, and democratic ideals throughout his life.
“During his extraordinary lifetime of 84 years, marked by an unyielding commitment to public service and progressive politics, C.O., as political associates fondly called him, was a strong voice and a leading light in Nigeria’s political firmament,” Tinubu said.
Adebayo, a former academic and senator, rose to political prominence under the banner of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), led by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He made history in the 1983 elections by winning the governorship of the old Kwara State in a surprise electoral upset.
Tinubu also recalled Adebayo’s principled stance during Nigeria’s military era, especially after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He noted that Adebayo was among the pro-democracy leaders who went into exile to fight for the restoration of democracy.
“I worked closely with him during our years in exile. He demonstrated rare courage, integrity, and perseverance during those difficult times,” Tinubu said.
Chief Adebayo later returned to public life and served as Minister of Communications and Minister of Transportation from 2003 to 2007. Within the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, he was widely respected as a voice of reason and a stabilizing force.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Adebayo’s family, political associates, and the people of Kwara State, urging them to take solace in the enduring legacy of service and patriotism the late statesman left behind.
