Adeleke applauds Assembly over electricity bill, assures better power delivery

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the recently passed Osun Electricity Bill as a major step toward boosting economic growth and transforming the power sector in the state.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor said the new legislation, which provides for the establishment of a regulatory agency, would open the state to fresh investment opportunities, particularly in off-grid and renewable energy development.

According to Adeleke, “The new law will ensure the right energy mix. Renewable energy will complement the traditional energy sources. Osun State is open to new energy sector investors.”

He added that the law marks the end of exploitation and oppression of Osun people by some officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

The governor explained that the law provides for the creation of a State Electricity Regulatory Agency to monitor the electricity market, regulate service delivery, and address user complaints against the distribution company.

He stressed that the commission will be empowered to issue licenses to power generators and ensure better treatment of electricity consumers, warning the distribution company to brace for increased oversight.

“The regulatory commission will be addressing critical issues relating to customer–service provider complaints. It will not allow the current maltreatment of electricity users in the state. The business community in Osun should heave a sigh of relief. The much-needed policy framework for the state power sector has arrived,” Adeleke said.

He commended the House of Assembly, the Ministry of Energy, and all stakeholders involved in drafting the bill and participating in the consultation processes leading to its passage.
