AFCON: Nigeria, Tunisia clash for supremacy in Group C

One of Africa’s most storied football rivalries takes centre stage on Saturday in the Moroccan city of Fès as Nigeria and Tunisia meet in a top-of-the-table Group C encounter of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations at the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès.

With three points apiece from their opening games, both sides are poised for a fierce contest as coaches Eric Chelle and Sami Trabelsi, themselves former internationals, seek victory that would secure an early place in the Round of 16.

The two teams have met 21 times over the past 64 years, each winning six matches, with nine draws. Three of those encounters were decided on penalties, two of which Nigeria won, including a 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifier and an AFCON quarter-final in Port Said 19 years ago.

Tunisia, however, enjoyed a major moment in the rivalry when they triumphed at the 2004 AFCON on home soil, edging the Eagles to advance to the final, where they went on to lift their only continental title.

The rivalry has also been marked by controversy, with both sides staging walkouts in past encounters. Nigeria left the pitch in a 1961 AFCON qualifier in Tunis after a disputed goal, while Tunisia walked out following Baba Otu Mohammed’s equaliser for Nigeria in the 1978 AFCON bronze-medal match in Kumasi.

Tunisia’s 1–0 victory over Nigeria in the Round of 16 at the AFCON in Cameroon four years ago ended a long wait for success, marking their first competitive win over the Super Eagles since a 1986 World Cup qualifier in 1985.

Saturday’s clash promises more drama and intensity as Nigeria aim to underline their status as tournament favourites, while Tunisia, bound for next year’s FIFA World Cup finals, chase a second continental crown.

Trabelsi will rely on captain Ferjani Sassi, Ali Maâloul, Hannibal Mejbri and Dylan Bronn, among others, while Nigeria’s hopes rest on the attacking trio of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze, supported by midfielders Alexander Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi.
