AFCON qualifiers: Ogunmodede explains inclusion of Umar, Osho, Collins, to squad

Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, has revealed the reasoning behind interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen’s recent player selections for Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Rwanda. This squad announcement includes both returning players and new faces, stirring anticipation as the team prepares for these crucial matches.
In an interview with NFF TV, Ogunmodede, one of Eguavoen’s two assistant coaches, explained that the player invitations reflect the team’s strategy to adapt to current injuries among regulars, prioritizing the nation’s success in the tournament.
The Remo Stars of Ikenne manager highlighted Sadiq Umar’s return to the squad. The Real Sociedad striker, who missed recent matches due to injury, was back in action during their 1-0 win against league leaders FC Barcelona on Sunday. “(Umar) Sadiq has been in the team for a while. He was also out due to injury. Now he’s back,” Ogunmodede noted.
He also mentioned Collins’ selection, explaining the value of a left-footed center-back in the team. “Maybe Collins, because the head coach felt we needed a left-footed centre-back, and presently, in the league, Collins has, to a reasonable extent, proven his worth,” he added.
Ogunmodede elaborated that Eguavoen’s commitment to scouting the local league was instrumental in identifying Collins, who has consistently excelled in the Nigerian Premier Football League.
“This shows that the head coach is doing a massive job. He has traveled across the country to watch the league. In Victor Collins, he has this utmost belief. I’ve only watched him two or three times, and he’s possibly the strongest left-footed centre-back we currently have,” Ogunmodede said.
The former KAA Gent defender also discussed Gabriel Osho, a newcomer replacing Semi Ajayi, the West Brom defender sidelined by injury. Ogunmodede shared that Osho’s inclusion fills a gap created by Ajayi’s absence.
“We believe each player is capable and qualified to represent Nigeria. Most are familiar faces, though Gabriel Osho is a new addition due to Semi Ajayi’s recent surgery,” he explained.
The Super Eagles are set to face Benin on Thursday at Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan before hosting Rwanda at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on November 18.
