African leaders pay tribute to former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari

The passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has drawn an outpouring of condolences and heartfelt tributes from leaders across the African continent, highlighting the profound impact he had not only on his country but on the broader African community.

From East to West Africa, presidents and heads of state remembered Buhari as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose leadership helped shape regional unity and cooperation during his decades of public service.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania expressed her sorrow, saying, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari. On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I convey our heartfelt condolences.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reflected on Buhari’s role in strengthening continental ties. “As South Africa, we stand with the nation of Nigeria in your mourning. President Buhari’s leadership brought our two nations closer together, and this partnership contributed to Africa’s collective growth and development.”

Back home, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to his predecessor’s legacy of service and devotion to Nigeria. “President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures. He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication. In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.”

From West Africa, Burkina Faso’s Transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, described Buhari as a leader who served with distinction. “I extend my sincere condolences and those of the Burkinabe people to the Nigerian people and the family of the illustrious deceased. I salute the memory of this soldier and statesman who worked for the development of his country.”

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye joined in honoring the former Nigerian leader, describing him as a towering figure in African politics. “Senegal salutes the memory of a prominent figure in Nigerian and African political life. I extend my heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the family of the deceased, and the brotherly people of Nigeria.”

Kenyan President William Ruto described Buhari’s death as a loss to the entire continent. “President Buhari’s demise is a loss not only to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also to the entire African continent, which has been immeasurably enriched by his wisdom and steadfast commitment to the liberation and prosperity of the Nigerian people.”

As tributes continue to pour in, they reflect Muhammadu Buhari’s role in regional affairs and the relationships he built with fellow African leaders during his time in office.
