Akpabio debunks reports of DSS takeover at National Assembly

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has refuted claims that the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken control of the National Assembly premises to thwart an alleged impeachment plot against him.
The reports, which emerged on Wednesday, alleged that the DSS had stationed operatives at all entrances of the assembly complex to prevent an attempt to impeach the Senate President and other principal officers.
Speaking during a Senate plenary, Akpabio dismissed the allegations as “fake news,” and humorously suggested that those behind the reports were likely seeking to generate revenue from increased website traffic.
“[They said DSS] has surrounded the national assembly to possibly stop the impeachment of principal officers,” Akpabio said. “There is no limit to social media… we are sitting here doing our work peacefully, oblivious to the mischief.”
The Senate President, drawing laughter from his colleagues, jokingly asked which Senate committee should address such rumors. He further remarked, “I understand they are paid if they have a lot of traffic, but I hope the public is aware this is total fake news.”
Akpabio then referred the issue to the Senate’s Special Duties Committee, requesting a prompt report on the matter.
