Akpabio urges senators to rededicate efforts towards fixing Nigeria

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on senators to renew their commitment to addressing Nigeria’s challenges as they resume legislative duties following the Yuletide and New Year break.

Delivering a welcome address titled “Rising to the Greatness of Our Calling” at Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio emphasized the need for a collective effort to transform Nigeria into a model nation in Africa and a beacon of hope globally.

“As we embark on this new legislative year, I urge us all to include in our New Year resolutions a renewed commitment to serving our great nation,” he stated. “Let us rededicate ourselves to the task of fixing Nigeria—transforming it into the country of our dreams.”

Akpabio highlighted the immediate task before the National Assembly: deliberating on the 2025 national budget. He urged lawmakers to approach the matter with diligence and patriotism, stressing the importance of the budget as a tool to fulfill the aspirations of Nigerians.

“This is not just a financial document; it is the blueprint of the aspirations and hopes of millions of Nigerians. Every item within it must reflect the collective dreams of our people and serve as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice,” he said.

He also emphasized the need for electoral reforms as Nigeria prepares for its next election cycle, describing it as both a legislative and moral imperative.

“Electoral reform is our chance to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will. It is the foundation of every thriving democracy,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President called on senators to remain steadfast in their prayers for the peace and unity of the country, acknowledging the numerous challenges Nigeria faces. He encouraged lawmakers to embrace bold actions and visionary leadership as the nation navigates the complexities of the 21st century.

“This moment is significant. History is calling on us to write a new narrative for our nation—one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities,” Akpabio urged.

He concluded his address by appealing for unity and dedication to the task of nation-building, reminding his colleagues that their legislative duties extend beyond drafting laws to shaping the future of the country.

“Let us unite in purpose, strive for the common good, and dedicate ourselves wholly to the task of nation-building. May God bless our efforts and guide our deliberations for the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
