Akpata criticizes Edo election, expresses readiness for public service
Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the Edo State election, Olumide Akpata, has condemned last Saturday’s election, alleging widespread vote-buying by the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Akpata described the election as lacking integrity and characterized it as a “transaction” rather than a democratic process.
Akpata pointed out that despite the absence of ballot box snatching, the exercise was marred by voter intimidation, falsified results, and rampant vote-buying.
“What transpired on 21 September 2024 was not an election but a transaction,” Akpata stated. “It was enabled by those who chose to stay away and by those who willingly sold their votes.”
He further lamented that some Labour Party members were complicit in the vote-buying scheme, selling their future to political parties that have long been criticized for policies that have impoverished the people.
Akpata expressed concern over the growing influence of political godfathers and surrogate governors, which he said undermines genuine governance in the state.
Citing observations by YIAGA Africa, a prominent civil society organization, Akpata said the election had been reduced to a marketplace where votes were traded.
He expressed disappointment that the people of Edo State had been disenfranchised and indicated that his legal team is analyzing the results to decide on possible next steps.
Addressing speculation about his political future, Akpata emphasized that he is ready to serve Nigeria and Edo State in any capacity.
“I belong to a generation that is about service. Whether it’s as a local government official or in the National Assembly, I am ready to contribute to the reorganization and betterment of this country,” he said.
ADC Candidate Praises Peaceful Conduct, Calls for Review of Allegations
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Engr. Derek Izedomwen, praised the largely peaceful conduct of the election but expressed concerns about vote-buying and irregularities in certain areas, particularly Edo North.
In a statement, Izedomwen congratulated the APC’s Sen. Monday Okpebholo and his running mate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, on their victory and commended security agencies for maintaining order during the election.
However, Izedomwen urged that all allegations of irregularities be addressed through legal channels, calling on aggrieved parties to avoid violence. “Democracy thrives when we uphold its principles, including the peaceful resolution of disputes,” he added.
Despite the challenges, Izedomwen noted that his campaign had significantly boosted the ADC’s visibility in Edo State, with many voters resonating with the party’s message of hope and transformation.
He also called for efforts to curb vote-buying and government interference in state elections to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Other Political Reactions and Commendations
Former House of Representatives candidate Omo Osagie, also known as Mighty Man, expressed optimism about the future of Edo State following Okpebholo’s victory. He predicted that the new leadership would prioritize the well-being of citizens and bring about development in key sectors.
Meanwhile, the Edo Professionals Alliance (EPA) lauded the election of Okpebholo and Idahosa, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver transformative leadership.
In a statement, EPA’s convener, Adebayo Ashaolu, highlighted the incoming administration’s commitment to improving education, healthcare, and economic development.
“Your leadership will shape the future of our state, and we are confident that you will champion the interests of all Edo people,” the statement read.
The group pledged its support and readiness to collaborate with the new administration in addressing the state’s challenges and pursuing opportunities for growth.
