Akwa Ibom Assembly not probing ex-governor Udom – Deputy Speaker

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has denied media reports alleging it is investigating former governor Udom Emmanuel.
Deputy Speaker Kufre-Abasi Edidem, in a statement on Tuesday, described the reports as speculative and unfounded, stressing that the House has not passed any resolution or set up a committee to probe the former governor.
According to Edidem, the only committee constituted during last Thursday’s plenary was tasked with investigating the alleged non-payment of workers at the state-owned St Gabriel’s Coconut Oil Factory for seven months.
He explained that the issue was raised by Hon. Uwem Peter Imoh-Ita, representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, whose constituents form a large part of the factory’s workforce.
The Deputy Speaker clarified that the committee’s mandate is limited to addressing the workers’ welfare and ensuring transparency in the management of the factory, not probing ownership or other companies in the state.
“The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly remains focused on its constitutional duties, especially in safeguarding public sector operations and ensuring workers’ welfare is protected,” he stated.
He added that the legislature will continue to operate without bias or political interference and urged the public to disregard the false report in its entirety.
