Akwa Ibom governor reaffirms commitment to gender balance in leadership

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to achieving gender balance in the state’s governance.

Speaking through the Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi, during the 24th Annual National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), held in Lagos on Tuesday, the governor emphasized the key role women play in nation-building.

Addressing the audience as the Special Guest of Honour, Governor Eno commended the contributions of women to the progress of the country, noting that they often excel when entrusted with leadership responsibilities.

He highlighted that his administration is actively promoting gender inclusion and holds the distinction of appointing the first elected female Deputy Governor in the state’s history.

“Women are soaring everywhere, scattering glass ceilings,” the governor remarked. “In Akwa Ibom, nearly 50% of the Permanent Secretary positions in the civil service are held by women. Additionally, the State Chief Judge is a woman, and about half of those cleared to contest as Chairmanship/Vice Chairmanship candidates for the upcoming local government elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are also women.”

Governor Eno further emphasized that the inclusion of women in key leadership roles extends to various levels of governance, including the current Transition Committees and Local Government Areas. He reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to maintain gender balance throughout its tenure.

While acknowledging the contributions of Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, for leading the wives of Lagos State officials in promoting the development of Lagos and the nation, he also praised the efforts of his wife, Pastor (Mrs.) Patience Umo Eno, in driving development in the state through her initiative, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA),
