Alaafin receives Sheikh Balalau in Oyo, tasks religious leaders on tolerance

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has urged religious leaders to intensify efforts in promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among Nigerians of diverse faiths.
Oba Owoade made the call on Sunday while receiving the National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Dr. Abdullahi Balalau, who paid him a courtesy visit at the palace.
In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch described religion as a powerful force in shaping national identity, culture, politics, and the economy, warning against its misuse to incite hatred or violence.
“Neither the Qur’an nor the Bible encourages coercion or violence as a means of evangelising unbelievers. Killing in the name of religion does not bring glory to God. What He expects from us is love, friendship, and the message of salvation,” the Alaafin said.
He added that Nigerians must work collectively to promote peace and harmony, stressing that religious leaders have a duty to discourage extremism and preach genuine love.
The monarch commended Sheikh Balalau for his commitment to peace through teaching and preaching, recalling one of his sermons in Kaduna which, he said, reflected sincerity and a strong message of unity. He pledged his support for the cleric’s peace-building initiatives.
In his remarks, Sheikh Balalau expressed gratitude to the Alaafin for the warm reception, describing the monarch’s reign as divinely guided. He urged the traditional ruler to continue seeking divine wisdom in leadership, emphasising that true leadership is anchored on honesty, justice, and compassion.
The Islamic scholar, who attended the visit with members of the JIBWIS National Executive Committee and a large entourage of followers, prayed for the Alaafin’s good health and long life, as well as for peace and prosperity in Oyo, Oyo State, and Nigeria.
