Alumni, students reject renaming of Ibadan Polytechnic after ex-governor Olunloyo

Members of the alumni community and students of The Polytechnic Ibadan have rejected the renaming of the institution after the late former Oyo State governor, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, calling for an immediate review.
Yomi Akande, an alumnus and leader of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), expressed widespread dissatisfaction, stating that while Olunloyo’s name is honorable, changing the institution’s name would not bring any meaningful development.
He noted that the name “The Polytechnic Ibadan” carries global recognition, and altering it would be detrimental to its identity and history.
Another alumnus, Olaoluwa Olabode, echoed the concerns, warning that the decision could negatively affect both past and current students without offering any tangible benefits.
Sanmi Olatunde, also an alumnus, suggested that instead of renaming the institution, the government should have honored Dr. Olunloyo by naming a building or facility after him.
Similarly, the Student Union Government (SUG), in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Oladipupo Olamide, described the move as unjustifiable, arguing that it disregards the school’s rich heritage and could erase its legacy.
Olamide emphasized that for over 50 years, The Polytechnic Ibadan has stood as a symbol of academic excellence, and changing its name would cause irreparable harm to its reputation and the pride of its alumni.
