AMGA 2024: CDS confirms Libya, Burkina Faso, Mali attendance

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has confirmed the participation of military contingents from Libya, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali in the 2nd African Military Games, set to commence on Wednesday night in Nigeria. This comes despite recent diplomatic tensions between these countries, Nigeria, and ECOWAS.
Speaking at an official press conference held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the CDS emphasized the unity within the military, describing it as “one big family.” The event was organized to highlight Nigeria’s readiness to host a world-class competition.
The announcement follows strained relations between Nigeria and Libya over the harassment of the Nigerian men’s national football team during an African Nations Cup qualifier. Additionally, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had severed ties with ECOWAS following military takeovers in their respective countries.
Addressing these concerns, General Musa underscored the apolitical nature of the event and reaffirmed the solidarity of African militaries.
“The Libyan contingent is on their way, Mali is coming, Burkina Faso is coming, and Niger is coming. The essence is that all Africans want to participate, and those who can will be part of it.
“The military worldwide is one big family, and we understand ourselves. This is not about politics. This is a military event where we come together to enjoy ourselves. Nigerians are hospitable, and we want to extend that hospitality to our fellow Africans because we are all the same,” he said.
General Musa also addressed concerns about Nigeria’s preparedness and security, given the series of postponements the African Military Games have faced since their inaugural edition in Kenya in 2002.
“Yes, there have been postponements, but we all know that things have greatly improved. This event is part of our non-kinetic efforts and soft power, showcasing Nigeria’s peaceful environment, especially Abuja. Security is guaranteed, and we are working together to ensure the event’s success. This isn’t just a military activity; everyone has a role to play, especially the media,” he added.
A total of 25 countries have confirmed their participation in the games, which will feature 19 sporting events. The organizing committee has also planned to entertain athletes and fans with performances from A-list Nigerian artists, including Olamide, D’banj, Timi Dakolo, and Ice Prince.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria have promised to deliver a world-class event, showcasing Nigerian culture and hospitality to the visiting contingents and audiences.
