Super Eagles coach defends performances of Iheanacho, Boniface

Interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has addressed the recent performances of strikers Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Boniface during national team duty.
Both players have faced criticism following underwhelming displays, with Iheanacho’s call-up in particular sparking debate. His performances in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda failed to meet expectations.
“He’s an asset, but he has not been living up to expectations. He needed some encouragement,” Eguavoen explained. “I spoke to him personally. There was pressure on him, but he couldn’t handle it.”
Eguavoen also reaffirmed his confidence in Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, despite his ongoing struggles to find the net for Nigeria.
“He will remain part of the squad,” the coach stated. “We know what he is capable of doing, but it hasn’t worked with the Super Eagles yet.”
