Amman to permit Israel’s use of airspace to counter Iranian threats
“There is security, military, and intelligence coordination between Jordan and Israel regarding the anticipated Iranian response,” said a Jordanian official.
(August 11, 2024 / JNS) – Jordan will permit Israel to use its airspace in the event of an Iranian attack, according to a Jordanian official who spoke with Channel 12 on Saturday.
“We will allow Israel to defend itself against an Iranian attack within our airspace,” the official stated, emphasizing that this decision is driven by national security interests. He noted that similar cooperation occurred in April when Jordan assisted Israel in thwarting an Iranian assault, reinforcing Jordan’s role as a U.S. ally.
The Arab Post also reported, citing security sources in Amman, that Jordan has informed Israel it will authorize its air force to intercept any imminent Iranian attack within Jordanian airspace. The sources confirmed ongoing security, military, and intelligence collaboration between Jordan and Israel, ensuring that the Israeli Air Force is permitted to counter potential Iranian threats that might cross Jordan’s skies.
These reports contrast with Jordan’s official public stance, which asserts that its airspace will not be used by any foreign military force.
On April 13, the Royal Jordanian Air Force participated in a coalition effort that successfully intercepted nearly all of the more than 300 missiles and drones launched by Iran in its first-ever direct attack on Israel. Despite its frequent criticisms of Israel’s actions against Hamas, Jordan intercepted dozens of drones that were directed at Israel through its airspace.
