Anthony Joshua eyes new opponent as Tyson Fury fight falls through

Anthony Joshua is seeking a new opponent following the collapse of a highly anticipated bout with British rival Tyson Fury.

World Boxing News reports that Joshua is likely to face Martin Bakole next, with the fight potentially taking place in Africa under the patronage of Turki Alalshikh. Joshua has long expressed a desire to fight in his homeland, Nigeria, and could realize this ambition against Bakole, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the recent Ring Magazine Awards in London, Joshua and Bakole engaged in a light-hearted staredown for the cameras. Bakole later confirmed discussions about the fight on social media.

“Fight news soon in Africa,” said the Scotland-based fighter, tagging Joshua. He also thanked Turki Alalshikh, saying, “I would like to thank His Excellency Turki Alalshikh for the opportunity offered to me this year. Good news soon,” suggesting the fight could be imminent.

Fury recently ended any possibility of facing Joshua this year, stating the fight could only happen in 2025. Addressing fans, Fury cryptically remarked, “Dick Turpin wore a mask,” implying frustrations during negotiations. He also added, “Thanks, it’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy New Year!”

With Fury stepping away, the path appears clear for a Joshua vs. Bakole bout, which may serve as a final eliminator for a world title as Joshua aims to become a three-time heavyweight champion.

Bakole is currently in top form, having stopped Jared Anderson in August during the Riyadh Season. The 33-year-old also boasts notable victories over Carlos Takam and Olympic gold medalist Tony Yoka.

Meanwhile, Joshua is coming off a disappointing knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September. A defeat against Bakole could spell the end of Joshua’s career.
