The Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the South-West, Prince Diran Iyantan, has called on political leaders to pursue the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s vision of true federalism as the country marks his 70th posthumous birthday.
Iyantan said Akeredolu’s contributions to democracy, security and good governance remained relevant, urging authorities to turn his ideas into policies that would strengthen Nigeria’s federal system.
In a tribute released on Friday, the APC chieftain described the former governor, popularly known as Aketi, as a principled leader who stood firmly for justice and was willing to defend his convictions.
He recalled Akeredolu’s career as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as his service as attorney-general and governor of Ondo State.
Iyantan particularly highlighted Akeredolu’s role in promoting the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, which was established to improve regional security and strengthen community-based intelligence.
He said the late governor’s campaign for state police and greater autonomy for federating units remained important to efforts to tackle insecurity and make governance more responsive to local needs.
According to Iyantan, the most meaningful way to honour Akeredolu would be to advance reforms that promote public safety, justice, accountability and sustainable development.
He extended his condolences and goodwill to the Akeredolu family and the people of Ondo State, expressing hope that the late governor’s ideals would continue to inspire future generations.
