APC national secretary, Basiru, withdraws from 2026 Osun governorship race

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
The national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has officially announced his withdrawal from the 2026 Osun State governorship race.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Alubarika Movement House in Alekuwodo, Osogbo, Basiru said his decision followed consultations with party leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He explained that his current responsibilities as national secretary, combined with the need to strengthen party structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, require his full attention and commitment.
“Given the enormous responsibilities of my office and after extensive consultations with our esteemed leaders, particularly the leader of our party and president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I have resolved not to contest the 2026 Osun State governorship election,” Basiru stated.
“The demands of my national assignment, especially the imperative of consolidating our party structures and preparing for the 2027 general elections, require my unwavering focus to ensure the unity, success, and stability of our party at all levels,” he stated.
Basiru emphasised that his withdrawal is not a departure from progressive ideals but a renewed commitment to work with APC leaders in Osun and nationwide to mentor and support emerging political leaders within the party.
He pledged that the Alubarika Movement would actively support the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
On the 2026 Osun governorship election, Basiru expressed confidence that the APC would defeat the incumbent, asserting that the party remains a formidable force in the state’s political landscape.
