Arsenal beat Leeds 4-0 to remain top of Premier League table

Arsenal restored momentum in their bid for a first Premier League title in 22 years with a commanding 4-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.

The win extends Mikel Arteta’s side’s lead to seven points over Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom are in action on Sunday, keeping the Gunners firmly on course for the top spot.

Arsenal had stumbled recently, picking up just two points from a possible nine in their previous three league games, including a first home defeat of the season to Manchester United.

Questions had surfaced over whether Arteta’s squad could finally overcome the psychological hurdle after finishing runners-up in the past three campaigns.

The visitors faced an early setback when Bukayo Saka was injured during the warm-up. His replacement, Noni Madueke, made an immediate impact, delivering the cross that Martin Zubimendi headed in to open the scoring. Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow then inadvertently turned another dangerous cross from Madueke into his own net, giving Arsenal a 2-0 lead by half-time.

Leeds, who had been enjoying a fine run of form, remain just six points above the relegation zone. The home side’s woes continued when Viktor Gyokeres converted Gabriel Martinelli’s cross for his 11th goal since joining Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon. Arsenal capped the scoring with Gabriel Jesus striking four minutes from time.

Arsenal will be hoping for favourable results from other fixtures this weekend, particularly the outcome of Manchester City’s visit to Tottenham and Aston Villa’s clash with Brentford.

Chelsea and Liverpool also have opportunities to climb the table, while Bournemouth eased relegation fears with a 2-0 win over Wolves.
