ASUU: UI students disrupt business activities in Ibadan, threaten more protests

By Richard Thomas, Ibadan
Students of the University of Ibadan on Friday staged a protest and disrupted commercial activities at Mokola roundabout, Sango Markets and Agbowo Shopping complex areas of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The students who carried placards with various inscriptions threatened to shut down business activities in Ibadan and the entire 36 states of the federation if the Federal Government fails to address ASUU issues within a short period of time.
Speaking with journalists during the protest, a 200-level sociology student, Solomon Emiola said the protest was all about the continuous strike that has kept students on the same position for over two years.
Emiola also warned federal government that it should forget the primaries of political parties for the forthcoming elections if it fails to address the grievances of ASUU.
“The Federal Government has kept our fate hanging, we don’t know our fate yet. We are not giving them ultimatum this time around, because we have been on the streets in the last two weeks and we will not stop until federal government yield unto us.
“We have consulted high profile people for their intervention but they think we are joking. They want to jeopardise our future and destiny; we will not allow such to happen,” he said.
