Atiku Abubakar: Allegations of sexual harassment must not be ignored

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement on Monday, Atiku expressed deep concern over the accusations, stressing that such serious claims should not be dismissed, especially when they involve a high-ranking public official.

“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be ignored, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility,” he stated.

He emphasized that the Nigerian Senate must uphold the highest standards of integrity and dignity, particularly in its leadership. He added that the handling of this case will reflect Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and gender inclusion in governance.

With only four women currently serving in the Senate, the former vice president underscored the need for a safe and respectful environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation.

Atiku urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to ensure an independent and credible investigation into the matter, stating that principled action is necessary to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
