Atiku appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as spokesperson after reconciliation

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson.

Okonkwo announced the appointment in a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him and describing the role as an opportunity to contribute to the party’s vision ahead of the 2027 general election.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the ADC’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, warning that the decision could further marginalise the South-East in national politics.

According to Okonkwo, subsequent discussions with Atiku and other party leaders addressed concerns over the region’s interests despite the constraints posed by the Electoral Act, 2026.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me. Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solutions to problems,” he said.

He added that consultations with Atiku and other leaders of the ADC had provided assurances on the interests of the South-East, while thanking Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their support.

Okonkwo also expressed appreciation to his family, supporters and friends for their prayers and encouragement, saying he would rely on their continued support as he assumes the new responsibility.

Atiku recently emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, with former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, selected as his running mate.
