Awujale was not buried; funeral held was for Alhaji Sikiru Adetona, says Oba Adekoya
The controversy surrounding the burial of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona has refused to abate, with traditionalists maintaining that the burial, which took place on July 14, 2025, was that of Alhaji Sikiru Adetona and not the Awujale’s.
According to the Eleguse of the Eduele kingdom, Oba Adedayo Olushina Adekoya, Ijebuland is yet to receive the news of the passing of Oba Adetona from his family in the manner tradition demands.
“Elders are currently unaware of the demise of the king, and until the necessary traditional rites are performed, the Awujale is still on the throne,” he said.
He berated the Muslim leaders for usurping the responsibility reserved for the custodians of Yoruba cultural traditions by hijacking the funeral of the late monarch, insisting the Awujale has not been buried until traditional funeral rites are performed.
The late Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, passed away on July 13 and was interred according to Islamic rites.
The Osugbo traditionalists had stormed the funeral to demand the remains of the late king in accordance with tradition but were turned away.
However, an existing law sponsored by the late Awujale allows monarchs in Ogun State freedom to choose how they are buried after their demise.
Speaking further, Oba Adekoya dismissed insinuations that traditional funeral rites entail dismembering and mutilating the remains of monarchs, saying those who hold such views are ignorant.
Many traditionalists are calling for stricter safeguards that would shut out potential heirs to the throne who are unwilling to uphold the culture and traditions guarding kingship in Yorubaland.
