Bago says Electoral Act enforced discipline in APC presidential primaries

Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, says Nigeria’s Electoral Act played a key role in ensuring discipline and order in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary process.
He made the remarks on Sunday in Abuja while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the announcement of the APC presidential primary results held at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre.
Bago said the provisions of the Electoral Act guided the party’s internal arrangements, particularly the use of either consensus or direct primaries where consensus could not be reached.
He said this ensured that no individual or group was above the law in the conduct of party nominations.
According to him, “we have seen the provisions of the Electoral Act at work. It has provided that either direct primaries or consensus, where we’re not able to build consensus, we had to do direct primaries.”
He added that the process was carried out smoothly across the country, with broad participation from party members in selecting their flag bearer.
Bago also linked the outcome of the exercise to growing confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process, noting increased participation by party members nationwide.
He said, “it’s democracy in action… people are excited about democracy and the rule of law, and you can see the massive turnout of party membership across the country.”
