Betty Akeredolu advocates for single-term presidency in Nigeria

Former Ondo State First Lady, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has reiterated her call for a single-term presidency, aligning with recent comments by Osita Chidoka on the need to reform Nigeria’s political tenure system.

In a recent opinion piece, published on social media and other platforms, Anyanwu-Akeredolu argued that a single-term framework would allow leaders to focus on governance and service delivery rather than political survival.

She noted that preparations for a second term often shift attention from development to re-election strategies, a trend she warned could see 2026 become “a lost year” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“While all eyes are fixed on 2027, life does not pause for elections,” she wrote, highlighting ongoing challenges such as healthcare, education, insecurity, and economic pressures that require sustained government attention.

The former first lady suggested that single-term governance would encourage leaders to prioritise legacy over longevity, institutional strength over personal political ambitions, and delivery over popularity.

However, she stressed that questions such as the optimal length of a single term, timing for implementation, and transition management must be addressed through national dialogue, constitutional clarity, and bipartisan cooperation.

“Nigeria cannot continue to mortgage governance at the altar of re-election politics. The courage to rethink our political timelines is no longer optional—it is urgent,” she emphasised.

Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu, who represents Ada Owere 1, has consistently voiced support for political reforms that enhance accountability and institutional performance across all tiers of government.
