BREAKING: Nine persons rescued as storey building sinks in Lagos

Nine persons have been rescued in a sinking one-storey building in the Ikeja area of Lagos, following the downpour experienced overnight in many parts of the state.

WesternPost learnt that the building, located at 47 Akinwunmi Street, Akinwunmi North Estate Mende, Maryland. began sinking in the early hours of today (Monday) after the rainfall.

Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Office, Ibrahim Farinloye confirming the incident, said that the team received a distressed alert in the morning on a sinking storey building where nine people were trapped.

 “NEMA advance team, after close observations, called for more reinforcement of personnel. Speaking with the trapped victims, a lady, Ms Blessing disclosed that they were up to nine people mostly women.

“The landlord of the building had used ladder to escape but NEMA questioned him for failure to contact emergency responders. Someone from one of the trapped victim’s office contacted NEMA.

“All the nine trapped ladies have been successfully rescued,” he said.

The agencies available for the rescue operations were LASEMA, State Fire Service and Police Disaster Management Unit.
