BREAKING: Oyo Assembly approves rotational Obas’ council chair

By Adejayan Gbenga
The Oyo State House of Assembly has reversed its plan to amend the Chieftaincy Law in a way that would have made the Alaafin of Oyo the permanent chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The reversal follows strong opposition from the Mogajis of the Soun Ruling Houses in Ogbomoso and Ibadan chiefs, who rejected the proposed amendment to the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs Law.
During plenary on Tuesday, after reviewing the recommendations of its Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the House resolved that the chairmanship of the Council should instead rotate among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomosoland.
