BREAKING: Super Eagles edge Egypt on penalties to clinch AFCON bronze

By Tosin Omojola –

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Saturday clinched the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging the Pharaohs of Egypt 4–2 on penalties.

The third-place match, decided at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, produced no winner in regulation time as both sides battled to a goalless draw over 90 minutes.

Nigeria had two goals ruled out for offside: the first in the opening half by Paul Onuachu and the second in the second half by substitute Ademola Lookman.

With nothing to separate the two sides at the end of regulation time and no extra time played, the match went straight to penalties.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero for Nigeria, saving Egypt’s first two kicks taken by Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.

That set the tone for the Super Eagles’ victory as Nigeria converted their penalties, with Lookman scoring the decisive kick to seal a 4–2 win in the shootout.

The heroic display earned Nwabali the Man of the Match award, which he dedicated to his teammates.

The 35th AFCON will climax on Sunday with the final match involving the host nation and Senegal.
