Seun Kuti, Peter Okoye reconcile after 2023 election feud

By Folashade Olorunfemi –
Popular Nigerian musicians, Seun Kuti and Peter Okoye of the former P-Square duo, have reconciled following the public banter they engaged in during the 2023 general elections.
The tussle erupted in February 2023 after Seun referred to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, as an opportunist who could not save Nigeria. Seun’s opinion of the presidential candidate triggered Okoye, who had earlier endorsed Obi ahead of the presidential election. This developed into an online banter, as the duo hurled abusive words at each other.
Recently, a viral video surfaced showing the reconciliation of the two musicians. The clip showed them hugging each other in a nightclub. The footage further revealed the conversation that ensued between the duo, as Kuti told Okoye, “We are artistes, we cannot be fighting over politicians.” The Afrobeats musicians smiled and nodded in agreement, depicting that they had buried the hatchet.
Seun, who is the son of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, is prominent for his vocal activism, taking controversial stances and addressing socio-political issues in Nigeria and abroad.
He took over as the bandleader of Egypt 80 after Fela’s death in 1997, evolving the genre with contemporary themes, including political views and global influences.
Seun released his first album, Many Things, in 2008 and has continued to excel in his music career since then. He has five main studio albums with his band, Egypt 80, along with several EPs and live sessions.
Conversely, Peter Okoye, fondly called Mr P, is a famous Nigerian singer, songwriter and dancer, and one half of the P-Square duo, alongside his twin brother, Paul Okoye, popularly called Rudeboy. Peter’s career has spanned from the late 1990s to date, with a temporary split between him and his brother, during which both went solo, before reuniting in 2021 to the amusement of their fans.
Establishing himself as an iconic artiste in the Nigerian music industry, Peter runs PClassic Records and is exploring the possibility of acting.
