The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has honoured Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, for his outstanding contributions to volleyball’s development and promotion in Africa and globally.
CAVB President, Mrs Bouchra Hajij, presented the recognition at the organisation’s Congress in Sal, Cape Verde, acknowledging Gumel’s decades of service to volleyball and the Olympic movement.
Gumel joined the leadership of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation in 1988, later becoming its president before rising to senior positions in CAVB and the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
He served as CAVB President from 2001 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2020, and was also an FIVB Executive Vice-President.
His wider sports administration career includes membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2009, after which he became an Honorary Member, and service as Treasurer-General of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
Gumel has been NOC President since 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. His contributions to volleyball span athlete development, competition organisation, governance and the sport’s promotion across Africa.
The CAVB honour recognises his longstanding influence on African volleyball and his role in strengthening its continental and global structures, while highlighting his contribution to connecting Nigerian volleyball with the wider African and international Olympic movement.
