Chieftaincy Crisis: Ondo monarch faults state govt over alleged court order breach

By Boye Oyeyemi

A fresh crisis has emerged over a chieftaincy dispute in Ondo State as the Kabiyesi Onirun of Irun Akoko and four others accused the state government of violating a subsisting court order.

The monarch, through his solicitors, challenged the decision of the Ondo State Executive Council to approve the Owa Adimula of Okeoro stool, describing it as unlawful.

In a statement issued by their counsel, Tolu Babaleye, the claimants expressed concern over what they termed disregard for judicial authority in the handling of the matter, disclosing that a High Court in Ikare-Akoko had on February 18, 2026, restrained all parties from taking further action pending the determination of Suit No: HCIK/20/CIV/2025.

They alleged that despite the order, the executive council on April 14 went ahead to grant official recognition to the disputed stool.

According to them, the action undermines the ongoing judicial process and could render the court proceedings ineffective.

The solicitors warned that such a move could threaten peace in Akoko North West and erode confidence in the rule of law.

They called on the state government to withdraw the approval and cautioned that contempt proceedings might be initiated against officials involved in the decision.
