Children’s Day: Kingdom Women charge govt on more support to girl child education

A faith based NGO, the Kingdom Women, has urged the Lagos State government to give more importance to the education and wellbeing of the girl child.

The NGO said as part of the celebration of 2022 Children’s Day, it would be educating about 1,500 girls in Lagos public schools on the importance of girls education.

During this event, the NGO said that it would also create awareness with parents and urged religious bodies to prioritize support for the girl child.

This was made known during a press briefing on Monday at Excellence Hotel, Ogba where the NGO highlighted activities lined up to celebrate this year’s Children’s Day.

Addressing journalists, the Programme Coordinator, Mrs. Adun Akinyemiju, said despite the fact that the organisation is a Christian based faith, it had taken it up to do more for the society and one of the project the organisation is passionate about is the education of the girl child.

She said: “On Wednesday, we would be visiting about three schools in Lagos State and would be educating the girls on the importance of their education and why they need to speak up whenever they are molested or abused, while on May 27, which is Children’s Day , we would take a walk from Dansol High School to Alausa to see the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu where we would present our matters of interest to her.

“Part of the things we would be educating the girls is the need to seek for counselling and psychosocial support if they ever experience gender base violence. The girls would also be taught on how to maintain personal hygiene, self-discipline and self confidence.”

Akinyemiju urged well meaning Nigerians to join them in the walk, saying 10.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria which is the highest rate in the world.

She noted that the theme of this year’s walk is “cry aloud’ in prayer for children.

Also, Mrs. Anthony Adaramola, said religious bodies should train couples on parenting before they go into marriage so as not to raise wayward children.

Another member, Mrs. Module Eka, urged parents to do more for their children and create avenue to bond with them.
