Christmas: Adeleke exercises prerogative of mercy for Olowookere, Morakinyo, 51 others

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has exercised his prerogative of mercy towards Olowookere Segun, Sunday Morakinyo, and 51 other convicts currently serving various sentences in the Nigerian Correctional Service.
This decision follows the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
In a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the letter of commutation, dated December 24th, 2024, has been received and acknowledged by the relevant prison authorities. The letter reads as follows:
“WHEREAS the inmates listed in the schedule to this order have been convicted to various terms of imprisonment, including:
(i) Simple offences, for which they have served substantial portions of their sentences,
(ii) Convicts sentenced to death, having spent a minimum of 10 years in custody.
“AND WHEREAS, following the recommendation made to me by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, I am exercising my powers in relation to the said inmates to mark the 2024 Christmas celebration.
“AND WHEREAS, in the case of the 30 inmates convicted of simple offences, I have decided to remit and forgive the remainder of their sentences in full.
“AND WHEREAS, I have decided to grant outright pardon to 12 inmates convicted of simple offences.
“Four convicts have had their sentences commuted from death to outright pardon. I have also decided to commute the sentences as follows:
One convict has had his sentence commuted from death to 15 years imprisonment.
Six convicts have had their sentences commuted from death to outright release.
Now, therefore, I, Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, in the exercise of the power conferred on me by paragraph (a), (c), and (d) of subsection (i) of section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), am pleased to extend my grace and mercy to the said inmates.
It is my will and pleasure that the sentences of death, life, and years of imprisonment be commuted as indicated in the schedule below.
