Congo nominates Firmin Matoko for UNESCO DG, seeks Nigeria’s support

The Republic of Congo has formally requested Nigeria’s support for its candidate, Firmin Edouard Matoko, to become the next Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The request was made on Friday during a diplomatic visit to Abuja by Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso, who was received by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.
Makosso delivered a special message from President Denis Sassou-Nguesso to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and called for stronger bilateral ties between the two nations. He described Matoko—a career diplomat with over 30 years of experience at UNESCO—as highly qualified to lead the organisation at a pivotal moment in its history.
“We are seeking Nigeria’s support for his candidature not because he is Congolese, but because he is well qualified for the position,” Makosso said, noting Matoko’s roles as Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations, as well as other senior positions within UNESCO since joining in 1990.
In response, Vice President Shettima commended Congo’s regional leadership and assured that Nigeria would consider the request.
“President Denis Sassou-Nguesso is one of the greatest stabilisers on the African continent,” Shettima stated. “Be rest assured that all the issues raised, especially the candidacy for the Director-Generalship of UNESCO, will be conveyed to the President. I am hopeful he will endorse your candidacy.”
Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Congo and praised the country’s role in promoting peace and stability across the Great Lakes region.
Prime Minister Makosso also expressed gratitude to the Nigerian people for their humanitarian support to Congolese children through the Rochas Foundation, noting that several Congolese orphans have graduated from the programme.
