Creative economy can drive climate resilience in Katsina — Minister Musawa

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, has emphasized the role of the creative economy in building climate resilience and fostering sustainable development in Katsina State.

Speaking at the Katsina State Climate Action and Green Investment Summit in Abuja on Wednesday, Musawa highlighted the challenges facing the state, including desertification, water scarcity, and unpredictable rainfall, which threaten agriculture and food security.

She said that by embracing creativity and innovation, Katsina could unlock new opportunities for sustainable development, job creation, and social progress. Musawa pointed to storytelling, film, music, and visual arts as tools for raising awareness about climate action.

The Minister also advocated for sustainable fashion using eco-friendly materials and practices, as well as promoting eco-tourism and cultural heritage tourism to preserve natural resources and create economic opportunities.

“We can use our local textiles to create a fashion industry that celebrates our cultural identity while reducing environmental degradation,” she said, adding that investing in green innovation would create jobs, especially for women and youth.

Musawa called for strong partnerships among government, private sector, NGOs, and communities, urging stakeholders to take up the climate challenge with creativity and determination.

Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, also addressed the summit, unveiling the Katsina State Green Growth Agenda (KAGGA), a blueprint centered on Climate-Smart Agriculture, Renewable Energy Leadership, Ecosystem Restoration, and Green Industrialization.

Radda said the green economy could generate over 50,000 jobs by 2030, with initiatives such as planting 10 million trees, establishing climate-resilient farming cooperatives, and training 15,000 women and youth annually in green skills.
