Death toll rises in Benue attack, as search for missing officer continues

The death toll from the recent ambush on security operatives in Benue State has risen to 11, as authorities confirm the recovery of seven additional bodies. The attack, which occurred on September 19 at Agu Centre in Katsina-Ala/Ukum Local Government Area, was reportedly carried out by suspected armed herders and militia members.

Initially, three police officers were reported dead following the ambush. However, subsequent search efforts led to the discovery of more victims, including six police officers and one civil protection guard. This brings the confirmed number of fatalities to nine police officers, one hunter, and one civil guard.

The update was made public by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focusing on the Lake Chad region. The publication also reported that the recovered bodies have been deposited in a nearby morgue.

One officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police John Aledu, attached to the state’s tactical unit Operation Zenda, remains unaccounted for. A combined team of tactical units, local hunters, and vigilante groups are actively searching for him.

In connection with the attack, security forces have arrested 15 more suspects in Ukum LGA, raising the total number of individuals in custody to 21.

The Benue State Police Command has assured residents of its ongoing collaboration with other security agencies to track down all those involved in the deadly ambush and to bring them to justice.
