Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, has called for increased international efforts to support and protect victims of terrorism.
Speaking during the fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Badaru emphasized the global responsibility to provide comprehensive assistance to survivors of terrorism and their communities.
Badaru highlighted Nigeria’s active role in the 2023 8th Review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy (GCTS), which highlights the dignity, respect, and importance of victims in countering terrorism.
He urged the global community to strengthen protection and aid for survivors, promoting social cohesion through inclusive, community-led initiatives.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of education in combating terrorism, noting that providing young people with employment opportunities, critical thinking skills, and a sense of belonging can help prevent recruitment by terrorist groups.
He called for increased investment in innovative educational programs to support victims of terrorism and rebuild affected communities.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of terrorism victims, Badaru condemned the targeting of schools and the abduction of students by terrorist groups, which deprives children of essential education.
He commended the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, led by Vladimir Voronkov, for its ongoing efforts in promoting global solidarity for victims. Badaru stressed that collective international responsibility is key to ensuring enhanced support for those affected by terrorism.
