Dele Momodu backs Adeleke’s re-election, says opposition must unite against APC
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared support for Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election, despite his membership of the opposition party.
Momodu, in a statement on Tuesday, said opposition parties needed to put aside individual interests and unite behind Adeleke to prevent what he described as an attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to dominate the state.
The former presidential aspirant said he remained a committed member of the ADC, explaining that he joined the party because of plans by prominent opposition figures to form a broad coalition against the APC.
He, however, said the anticipated opposition coalition did not develop as expected, adding that he had continued to hope that Nigerians would collectively resist the APC.
Momodu said the political situation in Osun had made it necessary for opposition parties to adopt a common strategy, arguing that backing Adeleke was the most practical option ahead of Saturday’s election.
“It would be foolhardy not to see that with the manner APC has turned Osun State into a theatre of war, the only sensible strategy is for all opposition parties to align immediately and back the Accord Party candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke,” he said.
He said his decision was not influenced by friendship or family ties, describing Adeleke as a popular politician whose performance, according to him, had earned him recognition beyond Osun.
Momodu urged opposition parties not to create what he described as an opportunity for the APC to manipulate the election, stressing that they must unite to protect the integrity of the August 15 poll.
