Diri defends exit from PDP, says move made for Bayelsa’s progress

Ahead of his formal reception into the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, November 3, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was made in the overall interest of the state.
Speaking on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri said that although his decision might not be immediately understood by some people, it would, in due course, become clear that it was taken for the good of Bayelsans.

It was the governor’s first public comment since his resignation from the PDP on October 15, 2025.
Diri noted that someone had to make the difficult but necessary political move, stressing that unity and development should take precedence over partisan divides.

“Somebody had to take the decision (to leave the PDP), and I took it on behalf of the state. I took it in the best interest of Bayelsa. Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear to all,” Diri said.
He added that his administration’s focus had been on completing inherited projects and initiating new ones that would improve the lives of the people.
“When we came in as a government, we ensured that most of the uncompleted projects were completed, and we introduced new ones. That alone is enough reason to thank God,” he stated.

The governor also attributed the peace and security being enjoyed in the state to collective efforts, saying they were further reasons for thanksgiving.

“Politics is for development and not to bring your brother down. The gathering here is a testimony of unity in the state,” he said.
Diri commended Bayelsans for their continued support and urged them to sustain the spirit of thanksgiving and unity as the foundation for progress and development.
