Drama as NPFL first round ends

By Olaolu Joseph
The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) concluded its first round with an exhilarating weekend, featuring two away wins, one draw, and five home victories.
However, the most significant headline revolved around the swirling speculation regarding Daniel Amokachi’s rumored resignation as coach of Lobi Stars, following a frustrating 0-0 draw against Heartland FC, managed by fellow ex-international Emmanuel Amuneke.
Although the club management quickly dismissed the rumors, the coming days are likely to reveal the truth behind the whispers.
On the pitch, the action was electric. Abia Warriors, despite their inconsistent form, achieved a stunning away victory over Bayelsa United, leaving Governor Douye Diri and the home fans in disbelief.
The Warriors embodied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s fiery words: “Power is not served a la carte; you fight for it, grab it, snatch it, and run with it.” And that’s exactly what they did.
Not to be outdone, the Flying Antelopes of Enugu Rangers, still smarting from a midweek loss to Shooting Stars, stormed Minna and upset Niger Tornadoes with a gutsy 33rd-minute strike from Bashiru Umar, securing a precious three points against all odds.
In Ikorodu, the “Oga Boys” of Ikorodu City faced a challenging match as opponents began to figure out their style of play. Once sitting comfortably in third place, the reality of their situation began to set in.
However, their tenacity shone through in a gritty 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Sunshine Stars.
Meanwhile, Shooting Stars are experiencing a remarkable “Detty December.” In their five December matches, the Oluyole Warriors have remained unbeaten, scoring seven goals and conceding none, with two crucial away victories against Rangers and Sunshine Stars.
Their final home game of the year, a tightly contested 1-0 win against Kwara United, solidified their status as one of the league’s top teams.
Elsewhere, Remo Stars’ coach, fresh from leading the home-based Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Ghana, was back on the sidelines.
His tactical prowess was on full display as Remo Stars edged a resilient Akwa United 2-1, taking advantage of their opponents’ turmoil following the resignation of coach Babaganaru.
In the northern derby, El-Kanemi Warriors sent a strong message with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars, while Katsina United left it late against Nasarawa United. Azeez Falolu’s 73rd-minute goal sealed the win, further deepening Nasarawa’s troubles.
This weekend encapsulated the drama, passion, and relentless pursuit of glory that defines the NPFL.
